The Vitality Newsletter October Edition 🎉

Hello Reader,

If you feel like your ‘get-up-and-go’ has ‘got-up-and-gone’, you’re not alone.

With tropical storms and hurricanes, soaring gas prices and interest rates, rising virus outbreaks and multiple other personal and professional hardships, everyone is struggling in some capacity…and their vitality is lagging right along with it.

While struggles and challenges are certainly difficult, they are also an opportunity first for self-compassion and secondly for reflection. It’s a nudge to look back on what we’ve learned, what we’re grateful for and what we can perhaps do differently. It’s also a great opportunity to celebrate what’s gone well, no matter how small.

Speaking of celebrating…

November 3 is my birthday. Besides celebrating with family while drinking wine and eating cake, birthdays are a great time to pause and reflect on what’s gone well, what we’ve struggled with and what we want to do differently going forward.

And when we lean into what we can do, vs what we can’t do, we stop bumping up against (perceived) obstacles and start to find flow and ease again (even without wine and cake).

More flow and ease, more vitality.

Reflection begins with compassion for ourselves and others. It’s a foundational practice for vitality. It quiets our Inner Critics/Saboteurs and moves us out of our automatic fight/flight/freeze mode and creates a bridge to our more clear, creative and resourceful Sage mode.

Reflection isn’t about being critical or judging our past. It’s about being a non-judgmental observer and a curious explorer - both actions that can only be done when our Inner Critics/Saboteurs are safely stowed away and quieted.

Until those sneaky Saboteurs are managed (even temporarily), it’s difficult to access compassion and non-judgemental curiosity.

So if you find yourself stuck and unable to reflect non-judgmentally, I invite you to start with calling out your Inner Critic/Saboteur and take a mindful pause by bringing your awareness to your breath or one of your other senses for at least a minute or two. Stay tuned next month when I share a number of other ways to quiet those pesky Saboteurs.

As I reflect back over the last year, I’ve struggled with chronic back pain, building a business during a pandemic and economic downturn, peri-pandemic social isolation, and the canceling of a much needed vacation to a place we once called home - due to a devastating hurricane.

While much of those things were out of my control, what continues to be in my control is my ability to seek treatment for my back and take care of myself, continue to build a business one day at a time, take on an additional part-time job to get me interacting with people face to face (and helping me invest in my business), and get creative with a staycation at home. I know, these all seem like pretty straightforward solutions. But I'll tell ya, I spun my wheels and bumped up against a lot of obstacles before I got here.

And, of course, I am grateful for so many things…especially for those of you who have supported me in so many ways.

Much of my personal growth over this last year has been inspired by the ‘ahas’ of your self-awareness, your increased self-compassion when things don’t go as planned, and your courage of stretching out of your comfort zones.

I see you discovering how your strengths can help or hinder you when used in different ways and I also see you tying behaviours and actions to your values to help you prioritize and crush your goals and work towards your dreams. All of these actions and behaviours not only help you, but also ripple out to those around you - including me! 🧡

Hi Reader, here’s how to improve your and your team’s well-being 'The way of the Sage is ease and flow.' ~ Shirzad Chamine The 'inner critic(s)', the ‘itty bitty shitty committee’, the ‘devil on your shoulder’. These are all names for what Shirzad Chamine has coined the Saboteurs in his Positive IntelligenceⓇ (PQ) Program We all have them. The voice that keeps you awake in the middle of the night. The voice that sabotages your performance and robs you of your happiness by causing stress,...

Hello Reader, "Spring is the time of plans and projects" ~ Leo Tolstoy Happy Spring! It’s been a long winter here in Canada. Although it’s been unseasonably warm, we haven’t had much sunshine in Southern Ontario. In fact, this has been the darkest winter in over 70 years. To brighten up my winter, I returned to an old hobby of mine that I haven’t done in a long time - quilting. It’s a hobby I picked up when my boys were young. It got me out of the house one night per week to go to an open...
